Dengan tertubuhnya PORIM dalam tahun 1979 program-program penyelidikan kelapa sawit yang sedang dijalankan di MARDI telah dipindahkan kepada PORIM. Tujuan utama program-program penyelidikan bahagian ini adalah untuk meningkatkan pengeluaran minyak, mengurangkan kos pengeluaran dan membaiki kualiti minyak.
