The application\u00a0of genomics tools provides an opportunity to\u00a0overcome these constraints and move forward\u00a0from the phenotype-driven research that had been\u00a0the focus previously. In order to develop these\u00a0tools, the Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB)\u00a0and its partners achieved a significant scientific\u00a0breakthrough by decoding the E. guineensis and\u00a0E. oleifera genomes, in 2013. Obtaining high\u00a0quality sequence assembly proved to be a valuable\u00a0resource to identify genes linked to important\u00a0agronomic traits of oil palm. In this respect, using a\u00a0combination of classical genetics and whole genome\u00a0sequence as a reference, the gene responsible for\u00a0the three different fruit forms of E. guineensis\u00a0&#8211; SHELL &#8211; was identified. The identification of\u00a0the gene responsible for the fruit forms paved\u00a0the way for the development of the SureSawitTM\u00a0SHELL diagnostic assay kit. The kit advances the\u00a0application of molecular diagnostic tools in both oil\u00a0palm breeding and commercial seed production.<\/p>\n<p>Kajian genetik sawit sering menghadapi halangan\u00a0yang berpunca daripada kitar pembiakbakaan\u00a0yang panjang dan keperluan kawasan tanah yang\u00a0luas untuk penanaman. Aplikasi peralatan genomik\u00a0membuka peluang untuk mengatasi halangan tersebut\u00a0dan beralih daripada kajian berasaskan fenotip\u00a0yang merupakan fokus sebelum ini. Bagi membangunkan\u00a0peralatan genomik tersebut, MPOB dan\u00a0beberapa rakan kongsinya telah mencapai kejayaan\u00a0yang cemerlang dalam bidang sains melalui pengekodan\u00a0genom E. guineensis dan E. oleifera pada\u00a0tahun 2013. Kehadiran himpunan jujukan genom\u00a0yang berkualiti tinggi merupakan sumber yang\u00a0bernilai untuk mengenal pasti gen yang berkaitan\u00a0dengan ciri-ciri agronomi sawit yang penting.\u00a0Sehubungan dengan itu, melalui gabungan maklumat\u00a0daripada genetik klasik dan jujukan genom\u00a0lengkap sebagai rujukan, gen yang bertanggungjawab\u00a0terhadap pembentukan tiga jenis buah daripada\u00a0spesis E. guineensis \u2013 SHELL \u2013 telah dikenal\u00a0pasti. Penemuan gen yang berperanan dalam\u00a0pembentukan jenis buah tersebut telah memberi\u00a0laluan untuk pembangunan kit asai diagnostik\u00a0SureSawitTM SHELL.
