Policies and institutions in the development of Malaysian palm oil industry

PORLA

It is appropriate to firstly examine the basic factors and conditions which provided the necessary prerequisites for the establishment of the palm oil industry in Malaysia. The agro-climatic condition existing in Malaysia provided the essential base which enabled the cultivation of oil palm, while the national development aspirations in the sixties provided the driving force for carrying out the venture, and finally the nature of palm oil itself provided the opportunity for supplying another product to the world requirements for oils and fats.
