Performance of WakFoot as an in-field FFB transporter for soft ground and peat

ABD RAHIM SHUIB , AHMAD HJ HITAM, DR

The high cost of labour coupled with an acute shortage of agricultural workers in the plantation sector have made mechanization necessary. The role of machine in terms of mobility and function was accurately defined. The design and construction of an experimental transporter for fresh fruit bunch (FFB) collection in soft ground areas and peat are presented. Existing machines were field tested and evaluated to verify and establish the design solutions obtained. The horsepower required was estimated and special design features of the machine were determined. The design specifications of the machine were prepared and prototype built. Various field trials and machine design modification were carried out on the prototype machine.

The prototype was named WakFoot. The price of a basic unit of WakFoot is RM 35 000. Optional items such as FFB grabber and high-lift bucket will cost an extra RM 15 000.
