A survey on cosmetic products marketed in Malaysia: microbiological aspect
SURIATI HashimCosmetic products contain variable amounts of nutrients that support microbial growth. Most contaminants in cosmetic products include bacteria suchas Staphylococcus, Pseudomonas, Klebsiella, Achromobacter andAlcaligenes. Contaminated water is a likely source of organisms found in cosmetic products. Products such as shampoo, hand and body lotion, facial cleanser, shower bath and moisturizer were analysed. In this study, out of 84 cosmetic products analysed, 66.7% were found to be contaminated. Products with palm-based formulations were less contaminated than those without palm base. Most of the contamination was from bacteria and least from yeasts and moulds. The highest level of contamination occured in shampoo.
