Chemical composition of alkaline pulps from oil palm empty fruit bunches
RUSHDAN IbrahimThe chemical composition of pulp is the basis for many paper properties. This chemical composition can be modified or changed by chemical pulping. In this work, the chemical compositions of four types of alkaline pulp made from oil palm empty fruit bunches were studied. The empty fruit bunches were cooked in soda, soda-AQ, kraft and kraft-AQ pulping. The lignin, holocellulose, a-cellulose, monosaccharides and viscosity of these pulps were studied. The results indicated that the materials dissolved and retained in soda, soda-AQ, kraft and kraft-AQ pulping differed in quantity and quality. Soda pulp had the highest contents of lignin and holocellulose, whereas soda-AQ pulp had the highest content of a-cellulose and viscosity, while kraft-AQ pulp had the highest content of glucose and the lowest contents of arabinose, mannose and galactose. The study showed that the different alkaline pulpings produced pulps with different contents in chemical composition.
